Program Development Director
Carolyn Benard
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” (African Proverb). This philosophy informs the work Carolyn seeks to do in the world in concert with one of her favorite quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr.: “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
Carolyn’s BA in Cultural Anthropology and extensive experience with AmeriCorps has shaped much of her career and perspective regarding the intersection of culture, service, and work. Her personal mission is, “to be the most effective co-conspirator I can be as a white woman with unearned privilege.
The work of justice, inclusion, equity, accessibility, and diversity must be incorporated into every aspect and level of organizational life and work. To be actively inclusive - providing spaces that everyone can show up authentically in – means encouraging diverse ways of doing the work, celebrating outcomes, and elevating marginalized voices; it takes continuous and intentional reflection and adjustment.”
Carolyn holds a master’s degree from the University of Denver in Organizational Leadership with two foci: Organization Development and Strategic Innovation and Change. Carolyn has also completed an eCornell certificate program in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and is in the process of completing another focusing on Conflict Management.
Throughout her almost 30-year career, Carolyn worked in the fields of youth development, violence and drug prevention, national service and service-learning, grants management, group facilitation and training, and technical assistance consulting for local government entities implementing housing preservation programs for older adults that may have disabilities and lower incomes.
Now, Carolyn’s work with ECSC focuses on supporting organizational development and growth by providing her insight and expertise on fund development and fiscal processes; program development, evaluation, and replication; information management and development of guidance and policies; and organizational change management.
Carolyn stays inspired by taking advantage of lifelong learning opportunities whenever possible. She believes that traveling is one of the most effective teachers and would love to stamp her passport more often. In her off hours, you can find Carolyn exploring spaces to see the world anew on her own photo safaris, trekking through nature when she can escape the urban jungle, nurturing relationships in her circle near and far, and finding time to actively engage with two nieces and a nephew in Washington State.
