Empowering Older Adults in Early Childhood Education: The Early Childhood Service Corps Making a Difference

Golden, Colo. - April 2, 2024: The Early Childhood Service Corps (ECSC) continues to make waves in the education sector, showcasing the incredible impact older adults can have in early childhood education. A recent article by Denver 7 News highlights the story of Mike Van Meter, an assistant teacher at Thrive Preschool in Golden, who at 78 years old, has found new purpose and joy in working with young children.

"Being part of the ECSC is more than just a job; it's about giving back to my community in a meaningful way," shared Van Meter, whose journey back into the workforce began in 2022 as a substitute teacher with ECSC.

Founded and led by Lisa Armao, ECSC aims to address the challenge of filling part-time positions in early childhood education by matching older adults like Van Meter with opportunities that align with their availability and interests. Armao notes, "Most people want full-time work, but older adults are happy working three hours a day."

Since its inception in 2021, ECSC has trained over 110 older adults as part-time substitute teachers, with some, like Van Meter, transitioning into full-time teaching roles. The program offers comprehensive training at no cost to participants, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. Additionally, all candidates undergo thorough background checks before entering classrooms, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for children.

Bethanne Rodriguez, area manager at Thrive Preschool, expressed enthusiasm for hiring through ECSC, citing the invaluable life experience older adults bring to the classroom.

"To have somebody with a wealth of life experience is huge," Rodriguez emphasized.

Van Meter's story is a testament to the transformative impact of ECSC, showcasing that passion and dedication transcend age. Despite having no prior education experience, Van Meter's love for children and wealth of life experience have made him an invaluable asset to the preschool community.

As ECSC gears up for its next cohort starting in August, the organization encourages interested candidates to apply before the June deadline.
